About

Who We Are

.
We are planners, designers, architects, engineers and constructors with a passion for problem-solving. We are drawn to the complexity and challenge of healthcare, and we have designed and built dozens of facilities for hospitals, medical groups, and physician practices throughout the Northeast.
.

Why Healthcare?

.
The field of healthcare is always changing. We immerse ourselves in it, because no two healthcare projects are exactly alike. Each must take into account evolving demographics, care concepts, technology, reimbursement, and competition. A renewed emphasis on value and wellness has changed what is needed, and where it is needed. We strive not only to know where the industry is today, but to imagine where it will be tomorrow.
.

A Team Approach

.
It takes a team approach to solve complex issues. We provide leadership to integrate the client’s administration and front-line clinicians into a fully-collaborative process. In that process, we combine the client’s experience with our own, and expand with our knowledge of current evidence and research. Our team comprises multiple design, engineering nd construction specialties and has years of experience working with healthcare organizations and each other.

Our team includes:

Founding Principal and Architect

Stratton Brook Associates Founder (2002)

From my first job as an architectural intern in a firm specializing in hospitals, my entire career has been focused on the healthcare industry. I’ve worked in traditional architectural practices, as well as in a national design-build company, but when the timing was right nearly fifteen years ago, I formed Stratton Brook Associates. We strive every day to provide the very best service to our clients, while building long lasting relationships. While the projects have very serious goals and objectives, we try to see the fun in the process and keep it light. When I’m not in the studio or traveling to projects, I enjoy spending time with my wife of 34 years and our three daughters (and one new granddaughter), all of whom keep me humble! CAD/BIM and Visualization

Team Member Since 2002

I love working with Stratton Brook Associates, it seems like all our jobs are an interesting challenge and I just love seeing how the team puts together the finished product. I got into CAD/BIM Design because I have always enjoyed taking things from a concept to a finished design. There’s no more rewarding thing to me than modeling a buildingon the computer and then seeing the project come to completion. On a personal note, I enjoy spending time with family taking a simple walk with the dogs or going on a bike ride. My simple walk sometimes becomes more interesting when a little white ball and clubs are dragged along.

Interior Design

Team Member Since 2002

Throughout my career, I have strived to apply a thorough understanding of how to combine design concepts with architectural considerations to create warm, inviting environments and promote the client’s brand and style. I do this by using color, texture, furnishings, pattern, and artwork to enhance the organization and wayfinding of our healthcare clients’ facilities. No one can do this alone, however…in addition to collaboration with Randy, I always work closely with my canine assistant Zeke.

Structural Engineering Principal

Team Member Since 2002

A structural engineer is responsible for the design and sizing of the “bones” of the building. Working closely with the planners and architects, we strive for structural systems that will be strong yet economical, and provide the flexibility needed to accommodate future change and reconfiguration as needed. When I’m not calculating loads and stresses, I like to destress with weekend getaways (particularly skiing!) with my family.

I was turned on to engineering by my high school physics teacher. Up to that point, I had been an average student but I could get excited about this. In fact, I was the first in my family to go to college. In addition to the actual problem-solving of engineering, I enjoy the business aspects of the field, which is something they don’t teach you in the College of Engineering. Outside of work, I enjoy early American history, and our family loves to visit Williamsburg, Virginia.

Electrical Engineering

Team Member Since 2002

I was fascinated by engineering since the age of seven when I first saw the movie Star Wars.  As a college student, I received a degree in laser optics as well as electrical engineering as that fascination continued.  On the side, I played college baseball which soon turned into playing in an adult softball league during and after college.  These days on the side I enjoy staying in shape by training for and competing in triathlons. This coming year I will compete in my first Ironman in Canada and will also compete at the Miami Man 70.3 Triathlon to qualify and represent team USA in Denmark 2018.

Mechanical Engineering

Team Member Since 2002

I wanted to become a plumber/pipe fitter but could not obtain an apprenticeship because of the poor economy at that time…so I went to college and majored in engineering instead! I enjoy the challenges of designing HVAC systems and the satisfaction of a project successfully completed. I find designing and drafting on the fly relaxing. I’m left handed (kind of unusual for engineers) and I enjoy reading about and discussing history.

Haven’t you ever wondered what’s behind a bright light bulb or rotating fan? I did. It still astounds me how electrons can provide so much good to mankind. As an engineer, I enjoy working with other engineers and trades people to come up with suitable and practical solutions that meet the challenges of power system distribution. I was the first in my family to earn an engineering degree, a Master’s degree and a license as a Professional Engineer (PE). This may not be shocking, but my side interests include astrophysics, quantum mechanics…and social work.

Interior Design

Interior design has always been my passion. Seeing spaces come to life with color, light, furnishings and art is incredibly rewarding. The creative process is one of the most enjoyable elements of interior design for me. I find tremendous satisfaction- and inspiration – in working with others, and always take an open, collaborative approach with my clients and colleagues. I believe this integrated approach is essential to creating innovative solutions and building lasting working relationships.

Construction Management and Design-Build Principal

Team Member Since 2014

After studying civil engineering at the University of Connecticut, I have worked in the construction industry for over 25 years, and most of it has been focused on healthcare. I’ve managed projects with budgets ranging from $1 million to over $300 million. I was particularly proud to earn the Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) designation, the highest credential issued by the American Society of Healthcare Engineering and the American Hospital Association. In my free time, I enjoy boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound, as well as in Florida when I have the chance to get away from the New England winters.

Construction Project Manager

Team Member Since 2014

Having grown up in a family of construction professionals, it seemed natural to follow their footsteps into the field. I’ve done project management and procurement for several years now, and I’m currently completing a Masters degree in Construction Administration at Columbia University. Outside of work, I enjoy coaching girl’s lacrosse in New London.

It’s great being a part of Randy’s team and I love what I do! I studied and used to practice architecture, so helping architects find success is a personal mission. It’s always exciting when I see a firm grow project by project because of the strategies I helped them put into place. When I’m not wearing my marketer hat, I can be found discovering tasty eats and drinks around the world.

I grew up playing with Legos and surrounded by the historic architecture in New England. I decided to pursue structural engineering as a career after watching an interview with the structural engineer of the World Trade Center after 9/11 and hearing the passion in his voice for not being able to foresee all the potential forces neededto resist commercial aircraft impacting the buildings. Now that I’m in this discipline, I enjoy the relationships and process improvement in an industry where we never truly do the same thing twice. Outside work, I enjoy coaching soccer and an interesting fact is that I’ve been hit by a car as a pedestrian three different times, and I’m still here to talk about it!

I can’t say I’ve done it all, but I have done quite a bit in my 23-year architecture career. I have diverse experience in projects ranging from children’s hospitals to forensic science labs and have found that the enjoyment comes from successfully resolving the challenges of each project. It keeps me busy, but I do have a life after work. Recently I’ve returned to a passion that began in 8th grade art class – calligraphy. This time around, I’m feeling the Zen of the Pen – take it slow and think one letter ahead. And now my life is balanced.
